Members of the UNESCO Chair participate in the 1st DOCOMOMO Portugal

On October 20 and 21, the city of Coimbra hosted the 1st DOCOMOMO Portugal, organized by the Department of Architecture of the University of Coimbra under the theme “Education, reuse, and transformation of modern architecture and cities.”

The UNESCO Chair “Heritage, Cities and Landscapes. Sustainable Management, Conservation, Planning and Design” took part in the event with the presentation of two papers, in addition to contributions to the scientific committee, panel coordination, and book presentations.

Among the contributions, the presentations included “Conservation Plans for Modern Concrete Heritage: the case of Cine Estúdio Namibe, Angola” by Teresa Cunha Ferreira and Pedro Murilo de Freitas, co-authored with Margarida Quintã and Luís Urbano as part of the project "Cine-Estúdio Namibe | World Monuments Watch 2025" and "O reconhecimento do património Moderno em habitação plurifamiliar: o Campo do Luso como base para um método de reflexão", by Luciana Rocha and Rui Póvoas co-authored with Ana Tostões and Marco Reschetti within the project "WellBEH Well-Balanced Energy Housing Reasoning Method towards interventions crossing Heritage, Efficiency and Comfort".

During the book presentation session, the publication "Novo/Antigo. Escola do Porto" by Teresa Cunha Ferreira and David Ordóñez-Castañon. The book characterizes twenty-two works by architects trained at the Escola Superior de Belas Artes do Porto (ESBAP), offering reflections on the legacy of the Porto School as a contemporary approach to interventions in pre-existing structures, open to new syntheses and re-interpretations in continuity with tradition. The work reflects studies funded by the project "Atlas de Projeto no Património Arquitectónico: Contributos da Escola do Porto (1980-2020)" and includes pedagogical contributions from the course "Construir no Construído" by students of the Integrated Master in Architecture at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto.
